In recent market movements, notable cryptocurrencies Dogecoin (DOGE), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and XRP have all experienced significant declines, with each posting double-digit losses over the past 24 hours. This downturn coincides with Bitcoin’s sharp drop to a new three-month low, falling below the $88,000 mark.
Bitcoin, the market leader among digital currencies, saw its value plummet to as low as $87,115, according to CoinGecko data. As of the latest reports, Bitcoin’s price stands at $87,657, representing an 8% decrease on the day and effectively nullifying the gains achieved in the previous week.
Market analysts attribute this recent downturn to several factors, including the absence of any concrete information regarding the establishment of a U.S. national Bitcoin reserve and the failure of proposals to introduce BTC reserves at the state level, particularly in states like South Dakota and Montana.
Furthermore, analysts highlight a broader market pessimism influenced by the Trump administration’s tariffs and concerns surrounding the United States’ money supply situation.
Despite these market challenges, Bitcoin’s performance has shown a degree of resilience, especially when compared to assets like SOL and DOGE. Both of these currencies have significantly underperformed in the context of large-capitalization digital assets over the past few months, as enthusiasm for meme coins has waned and high-profile project launches have faced criticism. SOL’s value took an additional hit due to scandals and legal actions involving Argentine President Javier Milei’s promotion of LIBRA, a token built on the Solana blockchain.
Over the last 24 hours, SOL has depreciated by 13.7%, reaching a price of $135.46, its lowest since early September 2024, reflecting a 46.6% loss over the past 30 days. DOGE has also seen a substantial drop of 13% within the same timeframe, hitting a low of $0.1192, its cheapest since November, and marking a 43% decrease month-over-month. This decline has been exacerbated by mainstream media focus on controversies linked to prominent Dogecoin enthusiast and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, as well as the meme coin’s namesake, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Ethereum (ETH) and XRP were not spared from the market sell-off, with ETH falling 11.3% to $2,374 and XRP down 15.6% to $2.08 in the past day, in line with the broader altcoin market trend.
The total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies has seen almost a 10% contraction in the last 24 hours, dropping to $2.98 trillion. This decline in market value has been reflected in the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, a composite indicator of market sentiment, which has plummeted to 25, marking its lowest point since September 2024. This shift indicates a significant increase in market anxiety and a potential shift in investor behavior as the digital currency space navigates through these turbulent times.
