A recent investigation conducted by AMLBot, a blockchain forensics firm, has unveiled a critical timing discrepancy in the process for freezing assets on Tether’s USDT stablecoin platform. This delay in action, between the initiation and actual execution of asset freezes on the blockchain, has reportedly allowed malicious parties to illicitly transfer upwards of $78 million across Ethereum and Tron networks since 2017.
Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin – a digital currency designed to mirror the value of the U.S. dollar – employs a blacklist mechanism aimed at hindering the movement of assets by addresses associated with illicit activities. However, AMLBot’s findings suggest that the technical setup of this mechanism, specifically its reliance on a multi-signature contract, inadvertently creates a window of vulnerability. This window permits the execution of unauthorized transactions before the intended security measures can take effect.
The report details an instance on the Tron network where a request to freeze assets experienced a 44-minute lag until confirmation was achieved, during which $49.6 million was extracted by fraudulent actors since 2017 due to this gap. Similarly, Ethereum saw unauthorized withdrawals totaling $28.5 million within the same period, cumulating a loss of $78.1 million through these exploits.
Security analysts at PeckShield have reviewed and acknowledged the existence of this loophole, emphasizing that while it does not necessarily point to a flaw within the smart contract itself, it highlights an operational oversight that requires urgent rectification. The delay, inherent to the design of multi-signature processes which necessitate multiple approvals, represents a significant operational risk.
In response to this scenario, experts have suggested potential remedies, including the consolidation of the freeze request and the obtaining of necessary signatures into a singular transaction, aiming to close the window for exploitation. Meanwhile, Tether has yet to offer an official comment on the matter.
