The recent spate of kidnappings, which seems to specifically target individuals involved in cryptocurrency investments, has raised significant concerns over the safety of these high-profile figures. The arrests were executed by the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme, a specialized police unit that tackles armed and serious robberies. The operations took place across the Paris region and in Loire-Atlantique and led to the capture of individuals, some of whom are minors, on charges including criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, and attempted kidnapping. Authorities believe that these suspects were recruited by anonymous leaders through social media platforms to carry out these violent acts.

Another attempted kidnapping occurred on May 13 when a woman was targeted by three masked and armed individuals in Paris’s 11th Arrondissement. The quick action of two male bystanders thwarted the attempt. The intended victim was later identified as the daughter of Pierre Noizat, co-founder and CEO of the French cryptocurrency exchange, Paymium.
These incidents are not isolated occurrences but part of an unsettling trend in France, which has seen a noticeable rise in crypto-related kidnappings in recent months. In response, the French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, has pledged on May 16 to bolster the security detail for cryptocurrency figures, introducing measures such as a dedicated emergency hotline and comprehensive home security evaluations.
France stands out in Europe for the frequency of such incidents, having witnessed five physical attacks targeting the crypto community in 2025 alone. This figure highlights the country’s particular vulnerability and has spurred discussions on the best practices to avoid becoming a victim of these increasingly sophisticated and bold criminal enterprises.
Experts suggest a variety of strategies to safeguard against potential kidnappings, including the judicious use of multi-signature wallets and time-delayed withdrawals, which complicate the efforts of would-be kidnappers. Additionally, they recommend the distribution of wallet access across multiple secure locations to mitigate the risk further.
